One For The Boat? The Pier Bar

 

There’s a newly opened wine shop located on Pier 3 (that’s the Discovery Bay ferry pier in Central by the way) that is perfect for those who like their wine to go. Grab a glass of vino from The Pier Bar as you board your ferry home and the 20 – 25 minute ride home can be enjoyed sipping a glass of wine! Furthermore, you can also buy wines by the bottle so that it saves you time queuing at the supermarket once you’ve disembarked.

I went down there recently to check the place out and guess what…they serve my favourite white wine by the glass – how cool is that?!?! For those who don’t know, my favourite white wine is, and has been for the last year or so, Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc Viognier from California and at just $58 with no service charge for a glass, I actually look forward to my trips to Discovery Bay.

While I was there for a good two hours, a large number of travelers stopped in for a cheeky glass for the ferry showing that what used to be a hoard of beer drinking travelers have changed their tastes and enjoy a nice refreshing glass while on the water.

The Pine Ridge is just one of a number of wines by the glass, both red and white from the USA, New Zealand and more. They sell wines by the bottle, ready and chilled for your enjoyment and not just still wine, they have a good selection of both Champagne and Prosecco alongside ciders and bottled beers.

Additionally, they also have draught beers (Asahi, Guinness and Kilkenny) as well as tasty snacks for those who are hungry on the run, or just want to get dinner out of the way whilst on the boat to give them more time drinking in one of the bars in DB. There are Pukka pies available (hot) including steak and kidney, whilst also having Cornish Pasties and sausage rolls.

For those with more refined tastes there are breads and cheeses from Classified and truffles, terrines and foie gras from House of Fine Wines. Basically, you’re pretty much sorted for wine and dine gifts if you are heading over to a friend’s house on the weekend and, if you just want to head home after a long day’s work, crash in front of the TV with a bottle of red and some bread and cheese, that base is covered too.

The Pier Bar is open from 12pm to 12am Monday to Sunday (Sunday’s depending on foot traffic) and is located on Pier 3 at the Central Ferry Piers.
