Speaking with Henry Ho of the Hong
Kong Wine Merchants Chamber of Commerce earlier this month he told me that later this
year there will be a big drive with them working closely with restaurants to encourage
more BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle) within the city. It is something that is
still not particularly welcomed, although these days many people see the
benefit of paying corkage in restaurants, rather than buying wines off the wine
list (I know I do).
So, when we hear about free
corkage we believe it’s our duty to tell you and yesterday I found out about
another Central restaurant offering free corkage to its clients on a set day
and time of the week. Let me introduce you to Jaa Kitchen, one of Hong Kong’s
hidden gems tucked away in an alleyway on the junction of Hollywood Road and
Peel Street who is now offering all patrons who come on Wednesday nights, free
corkage.
Free corkage in the city is very
hard to find and as Wednesday is a night when many of us head down to Happy
Valley for a night of throwing money away on cheap beer and dodgy bets, instead
of doing that, one Wednesday night head out to Jaa Kitchen and take advantage
of owner Ian MacCallum’s generosity!
Jaa Kitchen serves “comfort
continental” food and in Ian’s own words is “affordable luxury”. We sat down
with Ian yesterday for a quick chat so we could learn more about free-corkage-Wednesday
as Ian told us that:
“I want to encourage BYOB so that
I have the opportunity to see new labels that I would not normally see. This
gives us the opportunity to learn about what our guest’s preferences are and
that in turn helps us to build a better wine list more suited to our clientele”.
For more information contact Ian
at Jaa Kitchen on (+) 852 2545 5988. In the meantime you can check out their Facebook
page at www.facebook.com/jaakitchen,
the restaurant is located at 61-63 Hollywood Road, Lower Ground floor (the
entrance is off Peel Street), Central.
