The fifth installment of “Le French GourMay Food and Wine Festival” takes place in Hong Kong from May 1st to May 31st this year with the spotlight on Bourgogne wines this time around. Le French GourMay gives the people of Hong Kong and Macau a chance to discover the very best of French food and wine in a month long promotion that brings Michelin-starred Chefs, wine and food importers and distributors and restaurants together in a celebration of French cuisine and culture.
Every year the festival features a different
region of France and this year the focus is on the wines of Bourgogne, red and
white, at a time when Burgundy wines in the city are gaining more and more
recognition, not just at the top end with Jayer and DRC, but at the price
points that everyone can afford, appreciate and enjoy with the food that they
were designed for.
The month will see a range of wine tastings,
workshops and promotions with a whole host of French restaurants promoting the wines
of Bourgogne. Michelin-starred restaurant such as Amber, Caprice, Petrus,
Pierre and Robuchon will offer specially themed menus as will many of our great
(but not starred) restaurants such as Chez Patrick, La Cabane, Pastis and La
Marmite.
The restaurants will work together with local Hong
Kong and Macau wine importers to offer special wine lists featuring the wines
of Bourgogne and importers such as One Red Dot, Summergate, Links Concept,
Kedington Wines and ASC Fine Wines will be supplying a whole range of wines to
said establishments. Retails outlets such as City Super will also be
highlighting wines of Bourgogne so that you can enjoy these wines at home with
your own cooking.

At a packed press conference the Consul General
of France Mr. Arnaud Barthelemy said that he is extremely happy this year to be
highlighting the region of Bourgogne and very happy to see the popularity of
Bourgogne wines increasing in Hong Kong.
“This year we will have eleven Michelin-starred
restaurants participating in Le French GourMay and we really must thank them for
presenting the best of French cuisine here in Hong Kong. Additionally, during
the festival, sixty winemakers from the Bourgogne will come to Hong Kong and
join us in the celebration. It’s the first time we will have so many winemakers
coming from France”.

“Besides wine and food we will also be
highlighting the full features of Bourgogne so we have also invited artists
from Bourgogne to participate in Le French GourMay that will show off the
strong and rich heritage of Bourgogne. Additionally, our partner, the Hong Kong
Jockey Club will organise a full wine and food month at Happy Valley”.
“Since the dropping of the wine duty here in Hong
Kong, wine consumption has doubled and wine exports from France has multiplied by
four. In this market, France still keeps its dominant position as it still
holds 50 per cent of the market in value and 40 per cent in volume”.
| Mr. Simon Tam |
Also speaking at the event, Head of Christie’s
Asia (also a partner of the event) Simon Tam addressed the room to elaborate
more on the rich diversity of wines from the Bourgogne region.
“France is the reference point for all things
to do with great wine and China’s billionaire’s number one destination to visit
for the last three consecutive years is France. Also, winemakers around the
world aspire to make wines that taste like French wines, now that is homage in
its absolute”.
“We are here to celebrate the absolute
deliciousness that is Burgundy, but it has not happened overnight. It’s been
about evolution and the acceptance of the great tastes that Burgundy offers
from two grape varieties and multiple personalities in terroir. Burgundy wines
have such a diversity to offer”.
