Post Malbec Day – Some Great Wines

So, Malbec Day is over for another year and after a night of tasting only Argentine Malbec’s at the American Club in Hong Kong’s Central District we thought it only proper to let you know which wines we thought were the best of the night – as we had already given you recommendations prior to the event.

The event hosted by Wines Of Argentina and was marked by a fantastic introduction and thanks from the Argentine Consulate General who let Master of Wine Debra Meiburg take the floor and talk a little about this fantastic grape variety that sometimes gets overlooked.

Those in attendance were fortunate also to be plied with freshly imported Argentina beef from local importers Roly Gonzalez and Hernan Caetano Das Pedras which was a delightful accompaniment to the wines themselves.

There were some of Hong Kong’s finest importers of Argentina wines on hand to guide tasters through a range of Malbec wines, all showing different traits and characteristics. So, here are our top wines of the evening – in order of preference – so you, in the future, may be able to source and pick these wines out next time you are grilling some meat on the BBQ!

First: Mendel Malbec 2010 (available from Ponti Trading Limited – www.ponti-tdg.com)

Second: Cuyum Mapu Malbec Rosé 2012 (available from Lipu – victor@belhk.com)

Third: Bodega Septima Gran Reserva 2009 (available from Edrington HK – sales@edrington.com.hk)

Fourth: Trapiche Malbec Vina Federico Villafane 2008 (available from Wine Shop Asia – www.wineshopasia.com)

Fifth: Bodegas Altos Malbec Reserve 2009 (available from Wine Culture – info@wineculture.com.hk)

Sixth: Vistabla Corte B Malbec 2010 (available from Kedington Wines – info@kedwines.com)

Seventh: Finca Flichman Misterio Reserva Malbec 2010 (available from So Grape Limited – celia.ip@sogrape.pt)

There were a lot more wines there which we tried and we did not want to give you an exhaustive list so this is our top seven – wines we shall certainly be looking to buy as the summer approaches and BBQ season kicks in. Yes, it might be hot in Hong Kong in the summer, but all these wine deserve a good bit of red meat them and what a barbie without a good steak?
