Bollinger Rosé Gets A New Shape

Champagne Bollinger, founded in 1829, launched the new bottle shape for its rosé Champagne last week here in Hong Kong at a prestigious gathering at Hong Kong’s Peninsula hotel. President of Bollinger, Jerome Philipon was in the city to oversee the launch and explain where the inspiration for the bottle shape came from and why it was better for the Champagne to be in such a format.

The new shape was initially released in 2012 for the Special Cuvee range and now is available for its Rosé and Grand Annee Rosé wines. The shape itself is inspired by a nineteenth century bottle that was discovered in the company’s cellars that dates back to 1846. The new bottle shape, unique in Champagne aims to better express the qualities of the Champagne inside it.

“Rosé Champagne really highlights the qualities of the exceptional Pinot Noir we have here at Bollinger”, said Mr. Philipon at the launch dinner. “The new bottle shape is not a typical Champenoise bottle and is exclusive to Bollinger. It’s very elegant and differentiates Bollinger from other Champagne houses”.

It has a thinner neck and larger base than the typical bottle found in Champagne, meaning it will age more like as if it was in a magnum format. “The idea of using the curved shape of this old bottle was to aim for the perfect balance of a small magnum with curves more pleasing to the eye than those on the standard bottle”, said Bollinger’s Cellarmaster Mathieu Kauffmann.

“In addition to aesthetic reasons, using this shape of this new bottle which is more like a magnum with a narrower neck and wider base should slightly slow down the oxygen exchange and therefore give a better quality wine”, Mr. Kauffmann went on to say.

The bottle shape will be available in all four formats of size; half bottles, bottle, magnum and jeroboam.

The launch of the 1846 bottle shape is the culmination of a wide ranging modernization and investment plan that was initiated in 2003 by Bollinger which has seen the construction of new a new press, winery and cellars in Mareiul-sur-Ay alongside the construction of their Oger site; completed in April 2011.
